Single device mode
Single-device mode does not require any previous setup. However, if you need root motion (tracking the actor's movement towards or away from the camera) without relying on the movement of the feet then an intrinsic calibration of a device is needed. If this is not the case you can continue with single device recording.
This calibration is necessary only once and can be re-used between recording sessions. We highly recommend calibrating the device after you check what resolution works for your environment. The process is very quick and can be done in two ways:
- Use a sheet of paper that has Charuco markers printed on it, by recording it from multiple angles (preferred)
- Use a tape measure, to measure distances between the camera and two points
Calibration is performed for a specific resolution and zoom level, which means that if you intend to record at various resolutions you will need to perform calibration for each.
AImation Studio can work with resolutions as low as 640x480. While it might seem that higher resolutions would always provide better results, this isn't always the case. Higher resolutions can create a zoom-in effect, increasing the area required (unless your device supports zoom functionality). However, improved image quality helps a lot in accurately estimating finger positions at a distance. Finding the right resolution may involve some trial and error to determine what best suits your needs.
Both methods are pretty straightforward with Charuco print being slightly easier to perform but requiring a print and lightning conditions can affect the results.
The tape measure method has fewer external variables and requires only a measuring tool, however depending on the setup a helping hand of another person may be needed.
- Intrinsic calibration using Charuco (preferred)
- Creating Charuco print
- Intrinsic calibration using tape measure
Once your device has been calibrated or if you choose not to calibrate you can proceed to recording your first animation! Single device recording
